Orange native and longtime businessman Carlton “Corky” Harmon died early Wednesday morning. He was 89 and had been hospitalized recently.
Harmon and his family were in the car business for decades and owned the Chevrolet dealership for many years. He traced his heritage back to the original Anglo settlers in Orange.
In addition, he was one of the community leaders who got the then-Lamar Tech in Beaumont to start college classes in Orange, which led to the creation of Lamar State College Orange.
Harmon served as president of the Lamar State College-Orange Foundation since its founding nearly 50 years ago. Last year, the college named the large lecture hall in the Allied Health Building in his honor.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, who is a retired head of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce.
