Gussie Fontenot, 98, of Vidor, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 27th, 2024, at Vidor Health and Rehab. A longtime resident of Vidor, Gussie was known for his remarkable life, his quiet strength, and his deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Born with a spirit of adventure and dedication, Gussie proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy at the Pearl Harbor De-Gaussing Station during World War II, an accomplishment he held dear throughout his life. After his military service, he graduated from Port Arthur College, setting the foundation for a fulfilling life filled with both professional and personal pursuits.
Gussie was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and an avid athlete, excelling in skating and staying active well into his later years. He had a talent for lapidary work, turning stones into beautiful keepsakes, and he found peace and wonder in bird watching, often marveling at the beauty of nature from his own backyard.
He is survived by his children: Austin Fontenot and wife Becky of Vidor, TX; Lance Fontenot and wife Terri of Fort Worth, TX; and Jewel Hawkins of Oklahoma. Gussie also leaves behind four grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a legacy of love, resilience, and a life well-lived.
A private family service will be held to honor Gussie’s memory. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends remember him by embracing life’s simple pleasures and cherishing time spent with loved ones.
