The City of Orange might get help from hurricane recovery grants to help pay for the new recreation center.
Mayor Larry Spears Jr. wants the “rec center” to have showers and spaces for people helping in disaster recovery to set up cots to sleep. He said after Harvey, members of the Cajun Navy and other groups had to sleep outside in the Walmart parking lot.
The rec center is one of the infrastructure projects for Harvey recovery that the city council will be discussing Tuesday morning at 9 during a regular meeting. A public hearing will be held on the proposed expenditures.
The city is getting nearly $8 in HUD funds issued through the Texas General Land Office.
City Emergency Management Director Lee Anne Brown has a list of suggestions for the council to discuss and decide for using the money.
Another proposed project is lining more of Cooper’s Gully, a major drainage area for the east side of town south of the interstate. A contractor is currently lining part of the gully through a Hurricane Ike grant from 10 years ago.
Other projects include updating the city’s master plan, a regional sewer lift station, demolition of the old Cove school, box culvert construction for drainage, and installing sluice gates.
The meeting will be in the council chambers next to the Orange Public Library.
Written comments on the proposals may also be sent to city hall, 803 Green Avenue, or by email at grants@orangetexasgov.us. Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. January 2.
