An Orange County grand jury last week indicted 32-year-old Brenika Rechelle Lott for capital murder in connection with the beating death of her 5-year-old goddaughter.
Lott has been in custody with a $1 million bond since she was charged with the crime three days after 5-year-old Daviana Landry died. Orange police reported the child died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Police went to Lott’s house, 712 10th Street, at noon June 26 after a call about an unresponsive child. First responders found a woman giving CPR to a child who was already deceased.
The child had lived in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and her family had been longtime friends with Lott, who was the girl’s godmother. The girl was visiting with Lott and her son. After the death, Child Protective Services oversaw the care of the boy.
Capital murder carries the death penalty. The Texas Penal Code allows a capital murder charge if the death involves a child younger than 10.
