The General Land Office (GLO) confirmed Wednesday that Savage Inland Marine has received a lease for fleeting its barges on the Neches River near the Bessie Heights Marsh. The lease will allow Savage Inland Marine to legally park barges in an oxbow south of the marsh.
Spokesperson Brittany Eck with the General Land Office said the lease is for a five-year term at a total cost of $500,312.95. Eck indicated that the GLO has added a requirement that Savage also purchase and maintain a policy providing pollution liability insurance coverage at a minimum amount of $2 million.
Savage Inland Marine and previously Thousand Foot Cut Towing Services have been operating barges in the area of the Bessie Heights Marsh without permits for over a year. The Orange County Commissioners Court issued a resolution in June of last year opposing the operations of Savage, but rescinded it on Tuesday which was the same day that the GLO was granting the lease to the barge company.
