The Bellville Brahmas scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to defeat the Bridge City Cardinals 5-2 in the first game of their best of three series Friday night at Goose Creek Memorial High School in Baytown. The second game will be played Saturday afternoon at Goose Creek with a third game if necessary to follow.
Junior pitcher Matt Sandoval was uncharacteristically wild for the Brahmas walking three Cardinals, but he yielded only four hits in earning the complete game victory. Sandoval also contributed with the bat reaching base three out of four times he batted.
Bridge City scored first in the second inning as Tanner Doiron led off with a walk. Derick Dearing pinch ran for him. Caleb Dubois got a one-out single. Both Dearing and Dubois moved up a base on a passed ball. Dearing scored to make it 1-0 on an infield hit by Kevin Gordon. The Cardinals actually had an opportunity to get more, but left the bases loaded.
The next half inning Bellville took the lead taking advantage of two walks from Doiron who started on the mound for the Cardinals. Conner McIntyre singled to load the bases before an error allowed the Brahmas to tie the game. A ground out by Kevin Black brought in a second run to make the score 2-1 in the top of the third.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two errors by the Bellville shortstop. Dubois reached on the first error and after moving to second on a ground out by Bradley Thibodaux he scored when a ground ball by Justyn Romero was also booted by the shortstop.
The Brahmas failed to take advantage of numerous runners in scoring position through the first five innings. They left 12 runners on base in the game and were only 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position.
Despite missing so many golden chances to score Bellville received a gift of two runs in the sixth to take the lead. Jake Miles walked to lead off the inning. David Moriaty ran for him. Kevin Gordon who had relieved Doiron in the fifth got the next two hitters, with Moriaty advancing to second on a ground out. Sandoval hit a grounder that the Cardinals’ shortstop Kyle Bergeron had trouble throwing him out at first and Moriaty scored the go ahead run with Sandoval going to second. Gordon then struck out McIntyre, however, the third strike pitch got away allowing McIntyre to reach base and the pinch runner Kolton Sunderhuse to score making it 4-2 in favor of Bellville.
In the seventh inning the Brahmas used a more conventional offense to score. Tanner Riden worked a walk off the Cardinals’ third pitcher Taran Burch with one out. Miles singled and Kyle Collins delivered a rare hit for the Brahmas with a runner in scoring position grounding a ball in the hole between short and third to bring home Riden with the final run.
Not going quietly the Cardinals actually brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Schuyler Thibodaux reached on another error by the shortstop McIntyre with two outs. Tod McDowell lined a single down the left field line to put two on with two out. Doiron the cleanup batter for Bridge City struck out swinging against Sandoval to end the game.
Game Two of the series will be Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at Goose Creek Memorial High School. A Cardinal victory will force a third game which will follow shortly afterwards. Game can be heard on Bellvillesports.com
