With first place on the line Bridge City got a clutch pitching performance from Peyton Havard. The Cardinals defeated the Orangefield Bobcats 1-0 at Paul Cormier Field Friday night.
Havard threw a complete game shutout to keep Bridge City (8-1) atop the district standings. He gave up just two singles, two walks, and struck out 11 Bobcats to earn the win for the Cardinals.
Orangefield (6-3) got a quality start from its pitcher as well. Blake Bradley was a tough luck loser also pitching a complete and allowing just one unearned run. Bradley yielded three hits and four walks while striking out four.
The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning. Logan Hamm singled to right with one out for his second hit of the game. Bradley tried a couple of pick off moves before appearing to have Hamm caught off first base with another pickoff, but the throw was errant and went down the fence in foul territory. Hamm easily got to second and then seeing the ball still against the retaining fence advanced to third.
The Bobcats were forced to bring the infield to cut off the potential go ahead run at the plate. Caleb DuBois took advantage by grounding a ball between the drawn in fielders at first and second for a base hit bringing home Hamm with what turned out to be the winning run.
The teams will play again on Tuesday night in Bridge City. The Bobcats have clinched a spot in the playoffs and are trying to hold on to third place. The Cardinals will try to wrap up first place with a victory in the game. Little Cypress-Mauriceville entered play Friday night tied for second with Orangefield. The Bears close out the season with the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns at Don Gibbens Field on Tuesday.
