Weekly Fishing Report Week of February 7, 2024
Sam Rayburn
GOOD. Water stained; 52-58 degrees; 2.11 feet below pool. As the water continues to rise expect all the fish to push shallow. There is now an inside grass line in 5 feet of water and an outside grass line in 15 feet of water. Start on from the bank to the inside grass line to see what you can find then move out fish in the inside grassline with rattletraps and crankbaits. Now is the time to find that heavy female full of eggs starting to stage in spawning areas. Crappie and white bass are in the river and creeks. Look for fish to start moving shallow to spawn on the sand bars. Catfish will be coming out of the creek channels to shallow spawning areas. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Lake conditions have drastically changed over the past week with the water level rising 3.5 feet. Even with the work on the dam being stalled we have seen a large warming trend, pushing the first wave of bass up to spawn water temperatures ranging from 52-58 degrees. Finding the majority of fish in the mouth of creeks, main lake, drains or main lake ledges where you can find bait fish. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
Toledo Bend
GOOD. Water slightly stained; 52-57 degrees; 1.09 feet below pool. Some of the back main creeks are muddy, but clearing. Bass are good in 2-25 feet of water. Target shallow fish with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and squarebill crankbaits. Mid range fish can be caught on crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Deeper fish are on small swimbaits, spoons and dropshots. Few crappie are starting to show up in the clear creeks, being caught on jigs. Report by Stephen Johnston, Johnston Fishing.
SALTWATER
Sabine Lake
FAIR. 58 degrees. When the winds are persistent fish the Bessie Heights Marsh ditches for drum, sheepshead and redfish using Carolina rigged live shrimp, or live shrimp with a popping cork. When the winds allow, redfish are good along the shorelines, points and drops in Sabine Lake using live shrimp with a popping cork. Redfish, sheepshead and drum catches on bayous shell humps with Carolina rigged live shrimp. Limits of slot redfish can be had off the rock piles and shell flats in the ICW. The influx of freshwater has pushed most of the fish south, slowing the trout bite. As the winds lay, expect the trout bite at the levees to resume. Report by Captain Randy Foreman, Captain Randy’s Guide Service Sabine Lake.
Bolivar
GOOD. 50 degrees. Water clarity is brackish and muddy on the north end, and clearing on the south end. Catches of sheepshead, a few small speckled trout, redfish of all sizes and black drum at the jetties using live shrimp, or cut bait. Some catches of stingrays and sharks reported in the surf, along with a few bull redfish. Nice catches of speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead, redfish and flounder reported in East Galveston Bay. White, brown, ghost and hopper shrimp have all been present in the bay, indicating a good shrimp migration. Report by North Jetty Bait Camp.
