Weekly Fishing Report Week of January 24, 2024
Sabine Lake
FAIR. 52 degrees. After another cold northern limits of redfish can be caught in the marsh ditches feeding on mullet and mud minnows. The Neches River is very low after the cold fronts, best catches in marsh canal points and rocks with 1/16 ounce jigheads on 5 inch red shad plastics. Lots of sight casting in the banks. Sheepshead and drum can be caught fishing off the bottom with a Carolina rig or live shrimp under a popping cork. Few trout catches, few flounder but neither are keepers. Report by Captain Randy Foreman, Captain Randy’s Guide Service Sabine Lake.
Bolivar
FAIR. 40 degrees. North Jetty Boat cut and East Bay producing nice catches of trout. A few catches of black drum biting dead shrimp or crab off the bottom all over the bay. Redfish are on fire with slot fish being caught daily at the jetty and Texas City Dike using mullet, and live or dead shrimp under a popping cork. Report by North Jetty Bait Camp.
FRESHWATER
Sam Rayburn
FAIR. Water slightly stained; 55 degrees; 7.42 feet below pool. There is work being done to the dam. Bass will be slow on rattletraps in the grass and staging on points and drains. Good size fish can be caught shallow. Crappie are slow in the lake as they move into the river channel. White bass are the up river. With the rainfall the more flow in the river expect the bite to improve. Report by Captain Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service. Fishing patterns are holding steady, but the forecasted 4-6 inches could change this. The rain may murk up the water clarity. Best bait colors will be white and chartreuse spinnerbaits or chatterbaits, black and blue spinnerbaits or chatterbaits up shallow, black and blue or green, pumpkin blue, soft, plastics, shallow and deep, and for your rigs and swimbaits, I recommend all white if not predominantly white. Large amounts of black bass are offshore, in creek channels or main lake ditches biting Alabama rigs, jigging spoons, dropshots or shaky heads. There is a shallow bite in the early morning and late afternoon on chatterbaits, lipless crankbaits or hybrid hunters. Report by Captain Hank Harrison, Double H Precision Fishing.
Toledo Bend
GOOD. Water clear; 46-49 degrees; 3.73 feet below pool. A lot of rain in the watershed, so expect the creeks to be muddy and stained, but the main lake should remain clear. With the water on the rise, some of the bass that were in that 6-10 feet range should move up with the freshwater. The best baits will be chatterbaits and spinnerbaits. The deep fish will get harder to catch because they will be off bottom. Cast swimbaits, crankbaits and spoons. No crappie report at all, but expect this bite to be nonexistent while the water is on the rise for the next week. Report by Stephen Johnston, Johnston Fishing.
