Former Orange County Judge Joseph L. “Pete” Runnels passed away February 11 according to his son Lance. He was 79 years old.
Runnels spent over 40 years in public service. He served two terms as county judge from 1976-82. He also served as OC Democratic Chairman and later became the Mayor of Pinehurst for 12 years, retiring in 2019.
He also had several business ventures, including the popular Quarter Deck game room back in the eighties.
Services are pending at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
