Restaurants and food businesses were looking good for the summer as County Health Inspector James Scales had high rates for inspections during the first part of June. He inspected 14 businesses and gave perfect scores to the Vidor City Pool, Cool Breeze on Texas Avenue in Bridge City, and Holiday Inn Express in Vidor. Six had scores in the 90s and two in the upper 80s. The lowest score was an 80 and went to the Sonic Drive-In on 16th Street in Orange. Pre-inspections with no scores were made at Fresh Prep on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City and a new location for James Hope Academic Center on West Park Avenue in Orange. Scores and demerits are:
Taco Bell, 2929 16th Street in Orange: 97. Mold was found on the drink dispensers and walls behind the equipment needed to be cleaned.
Cardinal Snow Cone Stand, 215 Hebert Street in Bridge City: 97. Storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old syrup. Broken equipment needed to be repaired or discarded.
Kim’s Donut Place, 3041 Highway 12 in Vidor: 95. Sausage was at an unsafe temperature.
Market Basket Deli, 11916 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 94. Several flies were found. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Happy Donuts, 495 South Main Street in Vidor: 92. Sausage and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. The compartment sink had dripping water and needed to be repaired.
Market Basket, 11916 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 90. Store used permanent markers to price cantaloupes. Ice was built up on the ceiling inside the walk-in freezer. A mousse was found on a sticky trap in the dry storage area.
Spanky’s Bar and Grill, 1703 North 16th Street in Orange: 87. An employee drink was found without a lid and straw. Gaskets and broken door handles needed to be repaired on the reach-in coolers. Several flies were found. Floors, equipment, fryers, ceiling tiles and air vents needed to be cleaned. The reach-in cooler door had exposed insulation and needed to be repaired. The floors in the kitchen needed new grout. The salad bar needed to be repaired. The back area of the restaurant needed to be cleaned of trash. Old equipment needed to be discarded.
Pinehurst Barbecue and Steak, 2100 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Buckets of food were being stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Several gnats were found in the back storage area. Pipes at the compartment sink needed to be repaired. Meat was defrosting inside a bucket of water. The door on the walk-in cooler was being to rust and needed repairs. Light shields were needed throughout the store.
Sonic Drive-In, 3103 North 16th Street in Orange: 80. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated and covered. A gasket was found taped together and needed to be repaired. Several flies were throughout the restaurant and a dead roach was in the storage area. Pipes at the compartment sink needed repairs. The inside of the ice machine needed to be cleaned of old foods and mold. A broken fry scoop needed to be replaced. The area around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. Broken floor tiles needed to be repaired and the grout replaced.
