A wooden pier on the Sabine River caught fire Thursday evening at the West Port Shipyard in downtown where workers were repairing a barge.
The Orange Fire Department had problems putting out the smoldering fire because the top of the pier had been covered in almost a foot of concrete. The pier is reported to have collapsed and fire fighters have been monitoring the situation as the pier burns out.
The fire put out a wide column of black smoke that could be seen for blocks.
West Port is at the east side of Front Street at the site of the old American Bridge yard.
