The annual Senior Citizens Picnic in Pinehurst has been cancelled for this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The picnic which was previously held on Labor Day was moved to November for this year and renamed the Fall Festival by the city.
Because of the concerns that are ongoing with the possible spread of COVID-19, Pinehurst City Administrator Jerry Hood announced this week that the Fall Festival will be cancelled. Hood is hopeful the current pandemic will be resolved and the Fall Festival in Pinehurst will be held next year on the second Saturday in November 2021.
Hood did have some good news concerning the $6.8 million mitigation project with the General Land Office (GLO). The GLO grant from the Harvey disaster will be used in three phases by the City of Pinehurst: sewers; streets; and the wastewater control center.
The City Administrator updated the status of the sewers and streets components of the grant. The plans and specifications for those two aspects of the project are finished.
Currently the engineers are in the quality check phase on the plans which will take possibly two weeks and then the plans go back to the city for final review before going out for bids. Hood replied, “Hopefully with no setbacks sometime in December we’ll see some movement here on the ground in the City of Pinehurst.”
The third component is to upgrade and elevate the electrical control center at the city’s wastewater plant Hood explained. The contracted electrical engineer is building the plans and specs which should take another three weeks. The control center flooded during Harvey thus the need for elevating it from its present location.
