
The Commissioners Court approved the canvass results of last week’s general election. Elections Administrator Tina Barrow presented results which were a record turnout for a non-presidential election with 29,712 voters casting ballots. The results almost matched the ballots cast in the 2016 presidential election. This was the last election where ballots will have straight party voting done. Over 17,000 people took advantage of the straight party voting opportunity with 83 percent of them voting for Republicans.
The Commissioners approved authorizing Airport Supervisor Missy Pillsbury to set and adjust prices of aviation fuel at her discretion. The Court praised Pillsbury for efforts since the county took over the operation of the Orange County Airport. A John Deere Gator motor vehicle was transferred from the Sheriff’s Office to the airport to assist personnel there in getting around the air field.
A resolution establishing and renewing the guidelines and criteria for tax abatement agreements was approved by the Commissioners Court. This was a follow-up to the Court updating its tax abatement policy a couple of weeks previously.
County Judge Dean Crooks was authorized by the Commissioners Court to sign the construction completion form for the project to widen Old Highway 90 at the Port of Beaumont which is in the very western portion of Orange County. The project was funded by a Texas Mobility Fund Grant and was undertaken by the Port of Beaumont.
