Longtime Deweyville instructor Joe Waldrum has been selected to receive a 2017 Wayne A. Reaud Excellence in Education Award. Waldrum has been with the Deweyville Independent School District for 35 years.
Waldrum founded the high school’s student council in 1986 and continues to sponsor it. Waldrum has about 150 students in his classes at Deweyville Junior High and High School campus for courses that cover several agricultural, horticultural, and animal science topics. He is the school’s Future Farmers of America sponsor and has coached every sport at Deweyville.
His contributions to Deweyville are not limited to the classroom. During the catastrophic flood in March 2016 that devastated the Deweyville community Waldrum worked with first responders and the National Guard by helping them locate people stranded in the high waters. Waldrum will be presented $10,000 in cash that goes with the Reaud Award at a ceremony May 2 at the John Gray Library on the Lamar University campus in Beaumont.
