Coming to Bridge City to take over the successful girls’ basketball program is Deon Duncan who previously served as an assistant coach at Tarkington which made it to the regional playoffs his final year there. Coach Duncan inherits a strong program from his predecessor Jennifer Willis.
Duncan says the Lady Cardinals lost a number of quality players to graduation, but they are fortunate to have Bailee Bacon back. She is a senior with great leadership skills on and off the court which is a benefit to all the girls. Other seniors providing leadership for Bridge City are Carlie Fults and Kassidy Wilbur both getting a lot of court time.
The coach is working in several younger girls to get them playing time, and is especially pleased with the work of a sophomore who is new to Bridge City.
Duncan is excited about Maysen Tyler who has moved into the district and will play point guard for the Lady Cardinals. She is getting a lot of valuable experience playing full time. Madison Trahan is a post that is expected to play in a starting role for the first time. Avery King will be playing a number of minutes coming off the bench.
Getting ready for district action is the emphasis now. Coach Duncan plays as many girls as possible to prepare them for the district games which are fast approaching. Duncan is rotating in about nine players every game to get them on the court experience which will be very beneficial to the girls. Duncan points out Bridge City was 3-6 at the start of December, but he thinks it has taught the Lady Cardinals valuable lessons that will pay off when the district games really start counting after the Christmas time. Coach Duncan adds that his senior girls have set as a goal winning the district championship and making a run in the state playoffs.
