The Waste Management worker who was killed after a car hit him Monday afternoon on MLK Drive was 28-year-old Derrick Kane of Beaumont.
Orange Police Captain Robert Enmon said the driver of the car that hit Kane as he was working by a garbage truck is in a hospital and has not given investigators a statement. Police checked the 18-year-old woman’s phone and she was not texting or talking at the time of 4:30 p.m. crash, he said. She was on her way to work at the time.
Blood samples have been taken from the driver to be tested. Enmon said she showed no signs of intoxication at the scene. She was still in the hospital Tuesday morning with a head wound.
“Right now, we don’t know why she did it,” he said.
Investigators spent Tuesday morning recreating the accident scene on MLK Jr. Drive near Community Church.
