The City Council met Tuesday in Bridge City. The council gave approval to two zoning requests that had been approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission earlier.
Both requests were on Ferry Drive. The first request is a change to low density residential which will allow the owner to build duplexes on the property. The second request is for property near the Wal-Mart store and changes the zoning from residential to commercial. This will allow the owner to possibly sell the lots for commercial use. An adjacent piece of property belonging to Wal-Mart was included in that zoning change.
Progress is being made on the Community Development Block Grant program to improve sewer connections in areas of Bridge City. City Manager Jerry Jones informed that 40 of the yard line jobs are completed which is quite good considering the amount of rain the area has had recently.
Drainage is an important issue across the county. Bridge City is working on multiple projects to address drainage according to Jones. An engineering firm is working on a drainage project for Crepe Myrtle and Center Street. Funding is available for it, and the engineers are finalizing the plans and specs for the work before going out for bids.
Work has yet to start on drainage boxes. There will be 13 of them and some will be in the vicinity of the drainage project around Arthur and Elsie. The plan is to match that program with the drainage program. “That might take a little longer, but we’ll be way ahead doing it that way,” Jones commented.
The City Council approved two resolutions that other local councils have given approval previously. The first was to request the Texas Legislature to amend the state tax code Chapter 352 to allow Orange County to use Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue for a pavilion to be built at the City of Orange Boat Ramp.
A second resolution is in support of the Chevron Phillips Chemical’s application with the Texas Enterprise Fund. Chevron Phillips Chemical has indicated Orange County is a finalist for a new plant it is planning to build.
The last item considered was the appointment of James LeBlanc as the Rabies Control Authority in Bridge City. The position is part of the Rabies Control Act of 1981.
