Dr. Natalia Murray Peveto, beloved mother, friend, educator, and advocate for special education, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2024, at the age of 80.
Born on August 30, 1943, to John W. Brackin and Ursula Deane Morrissey, Natalia pursued her passion for education at Lamar University, earning her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Music in 1969. She furthered her studies at McNeese University, achieving Master’s degrees in Education, Reading, and Administration in 1971 and 1973, respectively. In 1980, she obtained her Doctoral degree in Education and Psychology from Louisiana State University.
Dr. Murray-Peveto held numerous professional licenses in Texas, including Licensed Professional Counselor, Professional Diagnostician, Professional Reading Specialist, Professional Supervisor, and Provisional Elementary General. Her career spanned several prestigious roles, including Director of Special Education at New Waverly ISD (1996-2010) and Special Education Administrator at Gulf Coast Trades Center (1998-2010). She also served as a Diagnostician at Conroe ISD (1993-1996) and held various educational and counseling positions at institutions such as the Neurobehavioral Institute of Texas, Laurelwood and Gulf Pines Hospitals, Learning Lab, Inc., and National Childcare.
Dr. Murray-Peveto’s dedication to special education was unparalleled. She authored publications, including her doctoral dissertation on the relationship between biorhythms and academic performance in reading, and conducted numerous presentations on topics ranging from dyslexia to neurological dysfunctions. She was a member of several esteemed professional associations and served on advisory councils aimed at improving educational practices and policies.
Natalia was a devoted mother to her children: Bradley Dale Peveto and his wife Melissa of San Marcos, Greg Peveto of Orange, Lisa Peveto and her husband Lynn of Orange, and her deceased sons Garey Birt Peveto and Jeff Peveto. She is also survived by her grandchildren Payton Peveto, Jake Peveto, Shane Peveto, Scott Peveto, Derek Peveto, and Britton Peveto, as well as 10 great-grandchildren. She cherished her family, friends, and faith, finding joy in cooking and celebrating life’s moments. Natalia’s vibrant personality and love for football and golf and traveling endeared her to all who knew her.
Dr. Natalia Murray Peveto leaves behind a legacy of compassion, knowledge, and advocacy. Her contributions to education and special needs support have touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on her community and beyond.
A memorial service to celebrate Natalia’s life will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, on Tuesday July 2nd, with a visitation beginning at 12 pm and her service is to follow at 2 pm.
Natalia will be deeply missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched with her passion for education and unwavering dedication to others.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the Garey Birt Peveto Memorial Scholarship at New Waverly ISD.
