Friday, 2pm Update
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is monitoring Dorian, which is going to be a major hurricane. This dangerous system will reach the east coast of Florida on Tuesday. It is forecast to stay over Florida into Wednesday and could transition from a major wind event to a major heavy rain and flood event. It is not expected to be a threat to our region next week, but it bears watching as we go into this long holiday weekend, according to meteorologist Roger Erickson.
In addition, NHC is showing a tropical wave coming off the coast of Africa, which has a 30 percent chance for tropical development next week. It is too early to say if it will be a threat to our region, but it also bears watching.
Finally, Erickson and the NHC are tracking a tropical wave moving west off the coast of Cuba. It is expected to develop a weak low pressure area as it moves west across the southern Gulf of Mexico this weekend and early next week. This system may increase the rain chances along the Texas and Louisiana coasts Sunday into next week, and tides will run a foot above normal. Minor coastal flooding is expected during high tides into next week.
