It has been since the second week of March that classes were held in Deweyville schools because of the flooding from the Sabine River. Superintendent Kevin Clark of the Deweyville Independent School District said when students return to classes on Monday it will be like the first day of school again. Clark added teachers are excited to get back in the classroom, and he hopes the students will be just as excited as the teachers are.
The startup of classes again will find all the students in Deweyville at the High School and Junior High campus according to Clark. Prior to the flood Deweyville Schools used two campuses one for the elementary students and the other for junior high and high school students with over 300 students at each campus. Clark indicated when classes resume on Monday the High School will be housing over 600.
The High School campus served as housing for emergency responders during the flooding. Once they left Superintendent Clark stated work started to make room for all the elementary school classes. Clark expressed his appreciation for books, desks, chairs, and other supplies from local school districts that will be used at the high school. He indicated the school’s practice gym will now serve as three classrooms, as will the band hall and agricultural facilities at the high school. Clark concluded there will be a lot of transitioning going on.
Deweyville missed three weeks or 15 days of school since one week was scheduled for Spring Break in the Deweyville schools. Superintendent Clark is hopeful graduation for Deweyville schools will still take place May 27.
