
Coach Lance Dale of Deweyville High School starts his second season as the head football coach of the Pirates this year. Coach Dale is optimistic of a better season for Deweyville in 2015. Dale says his offense and defense have been installed now, the kids know what to expect from him, and he is expecting a better year.
The Pirates and Dale have some players back from last year’s offensive squad that should help the team’s improvement. Dale starts with the offensive line when talking about returning starters where he has Hunter Maloy, Caleb Bass, Dalton Marsh, Shawn Patsfield, and Brett Ladner. At quarterback Tristan Gordon will get the start, while at running back the Pirates have Thomas Henson, Mitchell Henson, and Jordan Gary. Deweyville can count on Caden Hubbard and Jeremiah Trevino as receivers along with tight end Ryan Lee. At wingback will be Levi Perkins.
The Pirates’ defensive line will have Perkins and Lee, linebackers will be Kobe Jernigan, Rodney Richardson, and Mitchell Henson, Tristan Gordon and Caden Hubbard will play in the secondary. Defensively, Deweyville will be strong in its front seven according to Coach Dale. The coach thinks the Pirates are a lot quicker this year, should be able to move to the football better, and pursue better making the strength on defense the front seven.
Workouts and scrimmages are to get players ready for the Friday nights’ lights which signify the start of the football season the last week of August. Coach Lance Dale says the emphasis for him and the Pirates’ coaches will be on the offensive line at Deweyville. Dale believes hard work from the coaches and the players will result in good things from them as the season arrives.
Coach Dale has indicated his front seven will be the strength of the Pirates’ defense, so he looks to improve the Deweyville secondary in time for the season opener. Dale points out that the Pirates have some young kids in the secondary that the coaches need to make sure know their assignments, teach them where to go, give them repetitions, and by the time the season starts then they’ll be okay.
The Pirates face another tough schedule in 2015, but Dale is not making any excuses for Deweyville this season. Dale sees a brutal schedule for the Pirates which includes five of the ten teams they will face are state ranked in the preseason poll. Dale is confident in his young Pirates that they are moving in the right direction, and their goal is to make the post season. They will play to win every Friday night and he is expecting a lot better year this year and is looking for great things.
Deweyville opens the season at home against the East Chamber Buccaneers on August 27.
