More than 100 people gathered Sunday afternoon in the Old Orange Historic District for the dedication of a Texas Historical Marker at the Cox House, current home of Judge Jerry and Susan Pennington. The house at 612 W. Orange Avenue was built in 1910. People attending included Dorothy Meadows, who played tea party on the front porch when she was a young child, and Wylie Allbright, who was born in the house on July 6, 1935, when he parents lived there.
Mayor Jimmy Sims read a proclamation declaring Sunday as “Old Orange Historic District Day” and said “all citizens are called upon to reflect upon the value of remembering and honoring the old homes which have and continue to be a reminder of our heritage.”
The ceremony included a Boy Scout honor guard displaying the United States and Texas flags. The scouts also led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The house was bedecked in red, white and blue bunting and flags.
Judge Pennington gave an abbreviated history of the house and Susan Pennington unveiled the cast historical marker standing to the east side of the expansive front porch.
