The West Orange-Stark Mustangs season ended Friday night in Tomball with a 31-14 loss to China Spring who moves into the Final 4 of Class 4A D2 playoffs with a 14-0 record.
WOS got on the board first following a fumble by the Cougars. They marched down the field with a ten play drive that resulted in a 3 yd. TD run for running back Elijah Gales. Cristian Polio added the point after for a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars would turn the ball over on their next two possessions with another fumble and an interception but the Mustangs failed to capitalize.
Then came the big blow of the game when star running back Gales went down after a tackle in a lot of pain while holding his arm. He went into the locker room and later came out in a soft cast.
The Cougars star quarterback Major Bowden would tie the game with a 72 yd. run with 8:30 minutes left and then after a three and out by the Mustangs, CS would drive 96 yards in the final seven minutes of the half and kick a 36 yd. FG to make it 10-7 going into the locker room.
CS would strike first in the third quarter with another long run by Bowden. The QB went 71 yds to make it 17-7. But the Mustangs would respond quickly. Keyshawn Robinson would hit Darren Anderson on a pass that resulted in a 70 yd TD play putting the Mustangs only down by 3 again.
The Cougars came right back, this time using a rare pass play. Bowden hit RB Kyle Barton on a short pass and he would go to break several tackles and run 44 yds. before Dawson Exline took it over from the two to make it 24-14.
Bowden would finish the Mustangs season with another 44 yd TD run for the final score. The senior QB, who is supposed to come to Lamar to play football, finished the night with 25 carries for 269 yds and three scores. Barton with 104 yds. on 17 carries.
WOS ends the season 11-2 and the Cougars will play Cuero in the semifinals after their 35-28 win over Navarro.
