On Saturday, July 19, 2025, at approximately 10:50 a.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service off Private Road 8057 regarding cruelty to non-livestock animals. Upon arrival, deputies met with a complainant who advised that their dog had been shot on their property by a neighbor.
Deputies began an investigation and obtained evidence for an arrest warrant. They then submitted the evidence to a Justice of the Peace, who subsequently issued a warrant for the arrest of Coby Wayne Ellis. At approximately 5:57 p.m, deputies served the arrest warrant on Ellis at his residence and transported him to the Newton County Jail, where he was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals (third degree felony).
Sheriff Havard would like to remind the residents of the county that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.
