Freshman Lauren Cox paced the Mean Green on day one of action from the Web.Com Intercollegiate at the Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida Monday. Cox finished her day at a combined 4-over par, after firing a team-low 72 in the first round. North Texas is currently tied for 13th overall at 44-over.
“Lauren really stepped it up today and I am very proud of her,” head coach Michael Akers said. “She puts in the extra time and it is paying off for her. I felt going in she would do well in Florida, since her hometown of Orange, Texas has many similarities. Sol Lee faced adversity today and I am really proud of how she handled it. We have preached about showering people with kindness. Sol did exactly that today and karma came through in the second round.”
Cox birdied five times on Monday, including four occasions during her very strong round one. She birdied back-to-back holes on No. 5 and No. 6, while also doing so on the 14th and 18th holes, respectively. Her lone birdie of her 4-over round two came on No. 8. The freshman sits in fifth place, eight shots off the lead, but only three shots back from a potential top-three finish.
