North Texas senior Lauren Cox continued her consistent play in the Mean Green’s season opener at Trinity Forest Golf Club earlier this week, and her finish was enough to earn her Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday.
Cox, the Orange native and LCM grad, tied for fifth at the Trinity Forest Invitational, shooting a 68-72-74 for a three-round score of 214 and finished 2-under par and led the way for a strong team finish of third out of 11 teams. She was fourth in the field of 65 golfers in Par 4 scoring and third in total pars. Over the three rounds, she carded nine birdies.
“I am very pleased to see Lauren receive Golfer of the Week,” UNT coach Michael Akers said. “She showed up ready to play this fall and played solid at SMU against a very strong field. Lauren proved last year she is one of the best golfers ever to play at UNT and is out to continue to set records for our program. Lauren is committed to being the best and works very hard. I look forward to her continuing to shoot low scores and for the team to produce top finishes.”
The award marks the first for Cox in her time at North Texas and is a hot start to the season after a banner season last year. Cox was a first-team All-Conference USA selection and set the program record for lowest single-season scoring average while turning in seven top-20 finishes and earning an NCAA tournament at-large bid as an individual.
Cox and the Mean Green return to action at the Marilynn Smith Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas, on Sept. 15-16.
