The fares to use the Orange County Transportation buses will be increasing in January. The Commissioners Court approved Wednesday the new fares recommended by the Director of Transportation for the county Janell Dischler.
The increase in the fares puts Orange County more in line with the fees charged by other counties using transportation departments. The fare increases must be advertised for 30 days before they go into effect. The new fares will be effective January 15, 2019.
Fares within Orange County:
General Public pre-scheduled one-way trip $2.00
Same Day one-way trip (subject to availability) $4.00
Unscheduled one-way additional trips (unless for medical prescription) $3.00
Fares to Jefferson County:
Travelling to Beaumont or Port Arthur pre-scheduled one-way trip $3.00
Same Day one-way trip (subject to availability) $5.00
Additional trip within Jefferson County (unless for medical prescription) $2.00
Dischler said this is the first change in fares since 2007. The basic change will be an increase of one dollar for trips in Orange County and a 50 cent increase for trips to Jefferson County and back.
The policy for abusing the transportation service like no-show penalties after requesting the bus will be more extensive. The charging of penalties will be at the discretion of Dischler.
The Commissioners Court approved the annual renewal of the sale of retail fireworks in the county. County Judge Dean Crooks summarized that certain holidays are covered for the sale of fireworks.
Crooks pointed out the state allows for the sale of fireworks in conjunction with the New Year’s Day celebration and the Fourth of July festivities. The state leaves it to the discretion of the county for fireworks sale during three other holidays Texas Independence Day on March 2, San Jacinto Day on April 21, and Memorial Day the last Monday in May. The Commissioners approved the sale of fireworks for all the periods allowed by the state law.
