The Commissioners Court heard updates from consultants on the buyout and elevation programs offered by FEMA during a workshop Tuesday. Nancy Beward with Wendorf, Beward, and Associates was joined by consult Phil Hampsten in giving a presentation to the Court.
The two consultants informed the Commissioners that 19 homes are included in buyout applications in the unincorporated areas of Orange County. In addition, 23 homes are included in the elevation program. Six infrastructure applications for Orange County were also shown.
The infrastructure applications included improving drainage in 21 neighborhoods. Another application was replacing tank car culverts in 43 neighborhoods.
The other four infrastructure applications were installing generators at the Road and Bridge precinct yards, elevating evacuation routes on four roads in Precinct 4, retrofitting critical county facilities like the Courthouse and the Sheriff’s Office, and stabilizing and elevating the bank on Four Oaks Ranch Road. The total cost of all the projects would be over $63 million with the county’s share to be about $15.7 million.
Beward and Hampsten said they would be making applications to FEMA this week for all of the projects. The FEMA deadline is officially November 25, 2018, but with that date being so close to the Thanksgiving Day holiday some officials with FEMA are asking for the applications within the next week.
