The Commissioners Court followed through Tuesday with a promise to support the City of Vidor in its endeavor to request the General Land Office to remove the requirement of choosing either the Buyout program or the Acquisition program. The current policy from the General Land Office requires municipalities and counties to choose either program, but not both for the Hurricane Harvey recovery funds.
Assistant County Attorney Denise Gremillion worked up a resolution in support of and joining in with the request being made by the City of Vidor. Robert Viator, Jr. the mayor of Vidor attended the meeting and said he approved the wording in the resolution drafted by Gremillion. The Commissioners Court unanimously approved the resolution.
Emergency Management Coordinator Joel Ardoin updated the Commissioners Court on the estimated cost to rehabilitate the Claiborne West Park which was severely damaged by Harvey. The Commissioners received a 26-page handout prepared by consultants Wendorf, Beward & Partners.
Work would include repairing restrooms, pavilions, and the park’s administration building. The report estimated the cost of repairs at between $458,000 to $623,000. A timeline in the report showed a workshop on December 10 with the Parks Department to reach a final decision on the repairs.
The Commissioners took no action requesting a six month extension of the November 30 deadline to advise the General Land Office of the county’s intent to apply for funds allocated for the Harvey Recovery Projects. Ardoin said the item was placed on this week’s agenda in error since the Commissioners Court approved the extension request last week. County Judge Dean Crooks explained the reason for the extension was to ensure everything requested by the GLO is turned in on time.
No action was taken on approving a permit bond to allow Square Mile Energy to move oil field equipment on South Teal Road in Precinct One of the county. The item was tabled to allow more time to investigate the road conditions where the work is to be done since that area was flooded by Harvey. Heavy oil field equipment on the weakened road could do serious damage. County Road Engineer Clark Slacum said his department will investigate the road’s condition and put the permit bond on next week’s agenda.
