The Commissioners Court took the advice of Assistant County Attorney Doug Manning on Tuesday and tabled until next week any action concerning an audit of the County Auditor’s Office. Manning prepared a resolution at the request of Commissioner John Banken which would authorize an independent audit of the County Auditor. Manning told the Commissioners he would like to meet with the Court in a closed session next week before any action is taken. County Judge Brint Carlton who was the lone member of the Court to oppose requesting the resolution two weeks ago indicates the cost of such an audit could be as much as $20,000 or in the hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the scope of the audit.
One purchase request from a court was approved and another request from a different court was tabled by the Commissioners Tuesday. The 128th District Court was approved to purchase a Dell laptop computer for just over $1300. The Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 Joy Dubose-Simonton asked to purchase security items for her courtroom totaling over $5500. A discussion started between the Commissioners of security at the other Justice of the Peace’s offices which Assistant County Attorney Doug Manning suggested would be better served in a closed session. Director of Maintenance Kurt Guidry was asked to prepare a list of security items at each J. P. court and present it to the Commissioners when they meet with Manning probably at next week’s meeting. The Commissioners approved making no changes to the county fees added to the vehicle registration citizens pay in Orange County. A $10 Road and Bridge fee will remain the same, and the county will continue to not impose the Child Safety fee.
