It’s summertime and that means coaches will be moving on or moving in depending on the situation. The only major move with our local schools was made before school was out when Bridge City hired from within, naming Allen DeShazo as the new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach. Below are some of the other moves that have been made so far.
Bridge City-
Coach Deshazo has been busy getting his staff in place. Former assistant Lance Robertson will take over as head girls basketball coach. He’ll replace Jolee Kolander. Laura Martin will also move up from her assistant coaching position to take over the girls soccer program, replacing Laura Hernandez. Suzon Martin has been hired from Humble ISD as a new assistant softball coach. Danny Villanueva will move over from Hull-Daisetta to be the Offensive Coordinator. Randall Robertson will be an assistant coach, moving over from Louisiana. And Cori Bosco is starting her coaching career at BC as an assistant girls soccer coach. Deshazo believes he still has one more coach left to hire to complete his staff.
Orangefield-
AD Josh Smalley has hired Hunter Uzzle to be an assistant coach. Uzzle got to assist the WOS baseball team last season. Smalley has a few more positions to fill with longtime assistant TJ Reed leaving coaching to go into administration at OF. Also assistant Rick Deutsch has announced he is retiring. Cindy Burton will leave her post as Head Tennis Coach to just concentrate on teaching.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville-
Eddie Michalko has been hired as the new girls head basketball coach. He came over from East Chambers and replaces Linda Riddick who got out of coaching.
West Orange-Stark-
Coach Cornel Thompson has a new baseball coach for the Mustangs next season. Sergio Espinal has been hired to replace interim coach Ryan Pickering, who had taken over when Craig Jones left for Kirbyville at the beginning of the baseball season. Espinal, 54, played for the Cubs organization back in the late 1980’s before getting into coaching. He comes to WOS from 3A Mathis HS. The Mustangs are also looking for a head basketball coach after Tramaine Hancock announced his departure to be an assistant at the new Beaumont United High School. WOS is also looking for a head volleyball coach with Gwen Kelly getting out of coaching. Assistant coach Seth Thomas has also told Coach Thompson he will not be back next season.
Vidor-
So far we haven’t heard back from Coach Mathews about any coaching changes.
Deweyville-
Athletic Director Brandon Prouse has announced the hiring of Greg Bass as an assistant coach. He’s coming from Kountze. Prouse has a few positions to fill with assistant Blake Peveto moving to Vidor. Also head basketball coach Hunter Estes has left to go to Central Heights in Nacogdoches where he will be an assistant coach. Prouse has hired Michael Bethea from Hamshire-Fannett to take that position.
