Rex (Clifton Grady Andrews Jr.) died in Cypress, Texas on January 13, 2018
after a 20 month battle with a glioblastoma (brain tumor). Rex is
survived by his wife of 36 years, Sandra Frizzell Andrews, daughter Ashley
Andrews Norris and son in law, Bryan Norris.
Rex was the salutatorian of the West Orange High School graduating class
of 1974. In 1978 he graduated from Lamar University with a degree in
Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, he began a career in the
petrochemical industry and obtained his Professional Engineering license.
He married his wife, Sandra, in June of 1981 and his daughter Ashley was
born in January of 1983.
In 1990 Rex transitioned from engineering to a career as an independent
insurance adjuster for energy related insurance claims with Brocklehurst
International. In 1995 he obtained the Chartered Property Casualty
Underwriter (CPCU) designation. In 2004, Rex formed Rex Andrews &
Associates, where he remained President until his death.
Rex was an engineer to the core, always interested in how things worked or
how he could make something work better. As early as middle school he
crafted a steam engine and his mechanical inclination continued into high
school working on cars. He built furniture and had side business at one
point selling shrubs he grew from seedlings. During Hurricane Ike he
built his own 12 kW generator. Most recently he designed and built a
coffee bean roster as well as lighted auto trailer hitch cover with an
NCAA logo.
Rex’s greatest passion over the last 17 years was Texas Christian
University sports. After his daughter, Ashley, started attending TCU in
the fall of 2001, Rex became an avid follower of TCU football. Rex
attended and tailgated at most TCU home football games and rarely missed
traveling to a TCU Bowl game. Rex and his daughter Ashley also had a
tradition of traveling to at least one away game every season.
Rex is preceded in death by his father, Clifton Grady Andrews Sr (Bubba),
along with his niece Erica Andrews and nephew Jake Porterfield.
Additional survivors include his mother, Nancy Penry Andrews of Cypress,
Texas, his brother Tracy Andrews and wife Becky of Bridge City, Texas, his
brother Chris Andrews and wife Michelle of Dripping Springs, Texas, his
brother Scott Andrews and wife Mandy of Eagle Lake, Texas and sister Lynn
Andrews Gamble and husband Jeff of Orangefield, Texas. He is also
survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20th, 2018 at Klein
Funeral Home (9719 Wortham Blvd, Houston, TX 77065) at 2pm. The family
requests that donations be made in memory of Rex Andrews to the MD
Anderson Brain & Spine Center instead of sending flowers.
