The Orange Public Library went to the cats and dogs Wednesday. A giant, live plush Clifford the Big Red Dog greeted people at the door. Mayor Larry Spears chanted “disco party, bow, wow, wow,” and magician Julian Franklin made the Cat in the Hat disappear.
The annual Summer Reading Program was underway.
The local library is adopting the national theme of “Libraries Rock” to show kids the fun part of books and reading.
Spears was the guest reader for the Read-to-Me group of younger children. The father with young children and another on the way was animated with his listeners. One of the three books he read was “Groovy Joe” about a disco-partying dog.
Franklin, a former school teacher, has been coming to the Orange library for a number of years. He is sponsored by the Friends of the Orange Public Library. His theme this year was Dr. Seuss and he involved his older readers with touches of magic and rhymes.
The library will have summer reading programs for children on Wednesday mornings through August 1. The Read-to-Me program is for younger children up to kindergarten age. The children must be accompanied by an adult. The time is 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.
Kids from first grade through sixth grade can join the Summer Reading Club with a variety of special guests. The hour-long programs are from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Young adults in grades 7 through 11 have special events on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7:30. The last program for that group will be July 31.
