The city of Orange plans to begin annexing 5.3 acres along Highway 62 north of Interstate 10 to accommodate a Blue Beacon Truck Wash station. City Planning Director Kelvin Knauf said the business plans to hire 60 employees.
On Tuesday, the City Council meets at 9 a.m. and will vote on a resolution to begin the annexation process. Knauf in a memo said multiple owners of the tract are requesting the annexation.
If the annexation is approved, the land will automatically come into the city with a residential zoning designation. Knauf said the city will then begin the process to change the zone to Interstate Development Corridor, which will allow the truck wash.
The tentative schedule for the process has the city conducting public hearings on the annexation at a regular meeting on September 16 and a special meeting on September 29. The first reading of the annexation ordinance will be October 25 and the second reading will be November 8.
Then the city will start the re-zoning process with a public hearing of the Planning and Zoning Commission and the city council on November 15.
Knauf said Blue Beacon plans to close its business in Beaumont on Walden Road. When hiring, the company will give preference to local residents, he said.
