Carl Pollard was born August 17, 1949, in Orange, Texas to the late Kato Hawthorne and Ruby Pollard. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and united with Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
He graduated from M.B. North High School, home of the Mighty Dragons, in the Class of 1967.
Immediately following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army on August 24, 1967, one week after his 18th birthday.
During his tenure in the military, he performed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969. He was discharged, with honors, on August 26, 1970.
Upon his discharge from the military, Carl made his home in Memphis, TN where his older sister Laura resided. To this day, she still refers to him as “my little brother.” It was during this time Carl started a family.
While in Memphis, he attended Shelby State Community College. He eventually found his calling, becoming one of the greatest hairstylists to ever live. AND THAT IS A FACT!
After moving back to his hometown in the 1980s, he remained in this profession for over 35 years, until his retirement in 2001. Over the course of those years, he established friendships that have endured until his death. BUT his timeless, boundless, and imperishable friendships were the ones he established with Kent Woodrow, Sherman Gilmore, and Carl Harris.
He was a chartered member of the Twenty Men’s Social and Civic Club. Those who knew him will long remember his love for the Dallas Cowboys. In the last year, as he began to grapple with his failing health, he OFTEN expressed many times how glad he was to be able live to see the first black president, Barack Obama. He could talk politics 24 hours a day.
In 2008 he relocated to Northeast Texas where he remained until he received a call from God, informing him that his new home was ready. This call came at 11:07 on Tuesday morning, June 8, 2021. Carl fought a strenuous fight and gave everything he had when his health became impaired in January of 2013.
Forever treasuring his memories: his beloved wife, Angela Spence-Pollard, three sons, Cornelius Askew (Amy), and Christopher Birmingham (Tabitha), both of Linden, Texas, and Milton Birmingham of Shreveport, La, three daughters, Tamika Pollard and Carla Pollard-Hagan (Jeff), both of Omaha, NE, and Alexandria N. Birmingham Lindo (William), of White Plains, MD, four brothers, Don Pollard and Johnnie Francis (Nedra), both of Orange, Texas, Kenneth Francis (Monica), of Atlanta, GA, and Michael Ballard (Felicia), of Lake Charles, LA, two sisters, Laura Pollard Curtis, of Mansfield, TX, and Sharon Momphrey of Beaumont, TX, 13 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
