The Bridge City Cardinals claimed a district victory on senior night with a 28-7 win against the Livingston Lions on Friday night at Larry B. Ward Stadium in Bridge City.
The Cardinals struck first with a 51-yard drive on its second possession of the game and only needed 50 seconds of the clock as freshman Ethan Oceguera scorched the Lions defense on a 26-yard jaunt to the end zone and a 7-0 lead following the extra point by Oscar Carranza.
Livingston was not able to muster much offense in the opening quarter and, following a failed fake punt attempt on fourth down and 8 from its on 47-yard line, turned the ball over on downs to the Cardinals.
This time Bridge City needed barely more than one minute of game clock as running back Rylan Ply zipped around the right side for a 46-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead near the end of the first quarter.
Livingston changed its tactics a bit on its next possession and began running an option attack with quarterback Jared Seagroves leading the way.
The Lions offense had its best drive of the game as Seagroves led the team on a 78-yard drive in just over five minutes.
The key play came when the Lions were facing a fourth and 3 at the Cardinals 30 yard line. Seagroves dropped back and hit receiver Chris Washington in stride down the left sideline for a 29-yard completion, which set up first and goal at the one yard line. On the next play Seagroves punched the ball in for the lone Livingston touchdown.
Bridge City answered before halftime with its own 80-yard drive, which was capped off when quarterback Cace Skinner connected with Jackson Tims on a short pass in the left flat. Tims fought his way through Lions defenders and dove toward the goal line just enough to have the ball break the plane for another Cardinals touchdown.
Neither team managed much offense in the second half, but Bridge City did manage to add another touchdown following Ethan Oceguera’s second interception of the night. Moments after the interception, fullback Andy Lara busted through the left side of the line for an 8-yard score to seal the victory.
Bridge City (2-7, 1-3) will close the 2018 football season on the road as the Cardinals travel to Splendora (8-1, 4-0) to face the district-leading Wildcats. Livingston (0-9, 0-4) will be at home in its final game of the season against the Huffman Hargrave Falcons (4-5, 2-2).
