The Bridge City Cardinals scored on their first four possessions and rolled up more than 400 yards of offense as they beat Cleveland 42-3 for Homecoming.
The Cardinals put together scoring drives of 69, 62, 48, and 75 yards to take a 28-3 lead at the half. QB Byron Trahan scored all four TD’s on short quarterback sneaks. After a scoreless third, Patrick Morris scored on a 23 yard scamper and Hunter Denton went 23 for the other TD.
The “Slash and Smash” duo of Morris and Cayce Draper combined for more than 200 yards on the ground.
Defensively the Cards did a good job of tightening up twice in the red zone in the first half when it looked like the Indians had opportunities to score. They connected on a 30 yd field goal in the first quarter and in the second quarter they got to the 17 where a bad snap cost them a shot at a 34 yd FG. The Indians reached the red zone one other time near the end of the game with a first down at the 13 and the Cardinals pushed them back to a failed fourth down attempt from the 15.
BC (1-0) travels to LCM (0-1) Friday.
The Cardinals also recognized the 50 year Anniversary of the 1966 State Championship team. During the pep rally the Cardinals presented the ’66 team with replica jerseys like the ones they wore when they won the title. It was also Homecoming for BC and Hope Hill (with father Thad) was crowned Queen at halftime.
