The Bridge City Cardinals air power proved to be too much for the Vidor Pirates as the Cardinals soared to a 48-17 district win on Friday night at Pirates Stadium.
Cardinals quarterback Hudson Hoffman passed for seven touchdowns and one interception for the game as Bridge City was never threatened after the first quarter.
The Pirates took the opening possession the length of the field and found the scoreboard first on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by sophomore Rylan Chesser for 7-0 Vidor lead.
The Cards responded as Hoffman threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brayden Frederick to make the score 7-6. Hoffman gave Bridge City the 14-7 lead on the next possession with a 19-yard scoring toss to Luke Nelson at the end of the first quarter.
The Cardinals extended its lead to 20-7 when Hoffman threw a 16-yard scoring strike to Evan Jackson early in the second quarter. The Pirates answered with a 34-yard field goal by kicker Troy McElven to cut the Cardinals lead to 20-10.
Abraham Mungia caught his first touchdown pass of the night for Bridge City with a 5-yard scoring catch right before halftime to make the score 27-10 at the break.
The Cards wasted no time finding the scoreboard in the third quarter as Hoffman went deep on the first play and hit a wide open John Smart for a 67-yard touchdown and 34-10 lead.
Vidor responded with its best drive of the night and capped off the possession with a 13-yard touchdown run up the middle by Ethan Copeland. Bridge City still led 34-17 at this point.
Nelson hauled in his second touchdown catch of the night on a 36-yard reception from Hoffman late in the third quarter and Mungia scored his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter on another 5-yard reception.
Bridge City (5-0, 2-0) returns home to Larry Ward Stadium next week to host the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks (3-2, 1-1). Vidor (0-5, 0-2) will hit the road to take on the Huffman-Hargrave Falcons (3-2, 1-1) next Friday.
