The defending district champion Bridge City Cardinals opened district play last week with their first win of the season over the Cleveland Indians. More good news is that Zeke Mendez should be back with a cast on his hand, but could be available to play for the Cardinals this Friday night.
Coach Dwayne DuBois sees a potent offense in this week’s opponent the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears. At running back Chris Winters has been a starter for at least three seasons and is a major contributor to the Bears’ Spread offense. At a wideout is Katon Brown who is very athletic and can go up for the ball with the best of the area receivers. J’Lon Douglas plays a key role on defense, but will spell Winters in the backfield.
LC-M Coach Randy Crouch has turned the quarterback position in the Spread over to sophomore Ethan McCollum. He is young, but a good one according to DuBois. “When they have him and Winters back there and then Katon Brown at wideout they’ve got some weapons offensively,” DuBois stated.
Bridge City will want to run the ball against LC-M, and DuBois said it is pretty clear where the Bears’ defense starts. Douglas was the defensive player of the district last season, and he has lost none of his intensity this season. The Bears are also very active in the defensive line. Winters is a starter at safety for the Bears. DuBois emphasizes, “The defense revolves around Douglas, and I think he’s one we’ve got to keep an eye on and have got to try to block him, but he’s a good one.”
This will be an early district showdown as well as a classic rivalry game. Coach DuBois anticipates a great ball game. Little Cypress-Mauriceville comes into the game after a big win against one of the district favorites Silsbee. Bridge City earned a solid victory over Cleveland. The winner of the game will be 2-0 and will have at least a share of the district lead.
As always, the coach believes the game will come down to blocking and tackling. Coach DuBois predicts the difference could be specialty teams. “I think whoever controls the specialty teams and has a lack of turnovers will win the ball game,” DuBois concluded.
Friday night is homecoming in Bridge City. KOGT will broadcast the game between the Bridge City Cardinals and the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears live from Larry B. Ward Stadium with the kickoff at 7:00 PM. The replay of the game will be broadcast at 7:00 AM on Saturday.
