The Bridge City Cardinals saw their season come to an end Friday afternoon in Navasota after a wild 7-6 loss to Wimberley in 8 innings.
BC needed the win to force a Game Three after losing the opener on Thursday 4-1.
The Cards scored first using textbook offense. Hunter Ford walked to first, Carson Sauceda bunted him to second and then CJ Riojas singled him home for a 1-0 lead.
The Cards would make it 3-0 in the fourth when Ashton Sumrall doubled to score Sauceda and Landon Leleaux running for Riojas.
But the Texans got back in it quickly in the bottom of the inning. Brady Havard walked the first two. He was replaced by Slade Herman and Wimberley would double and then single to tie the game at three.
Then fireworks in the sixth. With LeLeux and Sumrall on base, Carson Bounds would double in LeLeux and that was followed by Owen Tucker doubling in Sumrall and Bounds to make it 6-3.
But again the Texans would strike back. They scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded and the triple home the next to runs to tie the game again, this time at six.
The game would go into the bottom of the eighth and Owen Tucker would be the fifth Cardinal pitcher to come into the game. He recorded the first two outs before walking Bryson Anderson who would then steal second. Jayden Hall would then hit a dribbler down the first base line. Tucker had trouble fielding it, allowing Anderson to make it home and send the Texans (26-7-1) to the State Championship game for the first time. They will face Spring Hill for the 4AD2 Title Friday morning at 9am.
It was tough way for the season to end for BC (26-8-1) in front of a packed house in Navasota. But like the girls basketball team that also reached the semifinals, almost everyone is back next season. It was a tough break for Tucker, but the Cards wouldn’t have made it to extra innings without his bat as Tucker and Sumrall led the offense with 2-4 2RBI performances. Riojas also had two hits as BC outhit Wimberley 8-4.
