Week 3 was a good one for Bridge City. The Cardinals earned their first win of the season. They are all real excited with the victory.
Coach Allen DeShazo said all three phases of the game showed improvement, offense, defense, and kicking game. The players blocked better, tackled better, and all of them executed doing what they were supposed to do.
Getting special mention was sophomore kicker Oscar Carranza. He kicked two field goals, one was especially clutch in the final second of the first half. Carranza also kicked off allowing for good coverage pinning Anahuac deep in its own territory much of the game. DeShazo praised, “He’s done a great job of kicking for us so far.”
This week the Cardinals play a previous district opponent in Silsbee. The Tigers have dropped in classification, but DeShazo indicates they still have a quality offense. They run the ball out of the I-Formation and they run it well. Silsbee will run it until you stop it, and then they will run it some more. “They’re very well coached, very disciplined in what they do, and very committed to the running game,” DeShazo explained.
The main back in the Silsbee I-Formation is tailback Chris Martin. He and new Tiger quarterback Draylyn Taylor combined for 1,900 yards rushing last season. Although the run is the basis of the offense Taylor will occasionally look long for a big strike to one of several speedy receivers.
Silsbee will probably not be lined up in their base defense against Bridge City according to Coach DeShazo. The Tigers base out of the 3-4, but to slow down the Cardinals running game they probably will spread it out into a four-man front. The Tigers are very aggressive in the front line and at the linebackers. DeShazo analyzed, “It’s kind of like somebody kicked over an ant hill at times they’re running everywhere.”
Marquell Hale is very good at noseguard for the Tigers. Silsbee has strong experience in its two linebackers with Spencer Uribe and Sterling Herrington. The secondary is fast and will attack the line of scrimmage quickly.
Bridge City would like to make it two wins in a row this Friday night. DeShazo provides the keys for a Cardinal victory against a very good Silsbee team. First is avoiding penalties on offense. The coach reminded several procedure penalties cost the Cardinals big plays in the victory.
Next is holding on to the football. Bridge City only had one turnover in its win, but did leave the ball on the ground several times which disrupted the offense’s progress. “We do those two things and we should be okay,” DeShazo concluded.
