After 22 years serving as the Tax Assessor-Collector for Newton County, Melissa Burks has announced her retirement, effective October 31.
In a statement to KOGT, Burks said, “It has been an extraordinary honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Newton County as your Newton County Tax Assessor-Collector since 2003. Over the past 22+ years, I have had the opportunity to work alongside dedicated colleagues and interact with thousands of residents, County and State officials, while striving to provide efficient, accurate, and courteous service to our community. While doing so, I have made many lifelong true friends.”
Under Burks’ leadership the office has implemented numerous improvements to better serve Newton County. From updated equipment to the opening of a full-service south county tax office and a dedicated tax office at Toledo Bend. Burks said, “These achievements would not have been possible without the support of our exceptional staff, County leadership, and most importantly, the residents of Newton County.”
Newton County Commissioners Court appointed Tracy Noble to run the office. The position will be on the March Primary ballot.
