In typical Mike Shahan dry humor style, his response to having the new events center named after the retiring President Shahan and his wife Bridget was, “I sure wish you would’ve let us know you were going to do this before we went through hell coming up with the name Cypress Center.”
The new events center opened less than a year ago. One of several new buildings that have been constructed during Shahan’s 24 year tenure that has brought the little campus downtown into a thriving business of higher education in the Texas State University System.
Many of the regents, board, LSCO Foundation members, Senator Robert Nichols and State Representative Dade Phelan were in attendance to show their appreciation to the Shahan’s for their commitment to Orange and LSCO. Shahan got emotional when thanking former LSC-Port Arthur President Sam Monroe, who was also in attendance, for hiring him and bringing the Oklahoma native to Southeast Texas.
The evening also featured the four finalists for Shahan’s position. Michael Calvert, Thomas Johnson, Robert Riza, and Deana Sheppard were on display in a “meet the candidates” format. A finalist is expected to be named in August. You can read more about them in a previous story on KOGT.com
