Bridge City received good news and bad news this week regarding the color of the water citizens are using in their homes. The city is hoping to have more good news for its citizens in the next few weeks.
At the City Council meeting this week Skipper Nixon complemented the city on the clarity of the water coming from the faucet in his bathroom. Nixon described the water as crystal clear and the best looking water he has seen in the four to five years his family has lived in their home. Nixon added that it had been like that for 3 days when he spoke to the council.
At the same time Jason Burch of Bridge City was sharing videos taken with his phone of water coming out of his faucet that was a dark brown. Environmental activist Erin Brockovich even posted on Facebook this week about the poor quality of the water in Bridge City.
City Manager Jerry Jones reminded that the city is working hard to improve the quality of Bridge City’s water by installing filters. Jones indicated the immediate problem will not be solved just by the installation of the filters. The filters will remove the iron and manganese from the water which causes the discoloration, but the problem is the residue of those elements that have settled in the system over the years. Jones stated, “We’re going to be constantly flushing until we get them cleaned out.”
He encourages anyone with brown water at their home or business to contact the City Hall about the problem. Jones promises the city will have someone available 24 hours a day who will come as quickly as possible to flush out the water lines at your property and will continue to flush the water even after the filter systems go on line. The Bridge City water department can be reached by calling 735-6801.
