A ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning in Bridge City celebrated the completion of construction on the swing bridge over Cow Bayou on Highway 87. Bridge City Mayor Kirk Roccaforte had the honor of cutting the red ribbon signifying the bridge will soon be open to traffic.
Those attending the ceremony had the special opportunity to actually experience the bridge swing open. On the bridge as it swung to a 90-degree angle to the highway was City Manager Jerry Jones who is excited about the re-opening of the bridge for his town. Jones indicated he spoke to the engineer for the job, and the bridge should be open to traffic by Sunday. Jones felt the bridge operates really well.
The Texas Department of Transportation had been hoping to re-open the northbound bridge before the start of classes in Bridge City schools on August 24. Construction on the bridge began in January of 2014, and northbound traffic has been routed onto the adjacent southbound bridge during that time.
