Orange police report 35-year-old Rosa Bonilla, who died after Orange County jailers found her hanging in her holding cell Friday night, was arrested for having prescription Xanax in her purse. She had been the passenger in a car police stopped after seeing a brake light not working.
The arrest was about 10 Friday morning on DuPont Drive. OPD narcotics officers sergeants Jason Laughlin and J.C. Steele reported they were driving on DuPont Drive and saw a Chevrolet Camaro turn into a driveway in the 1300 block. A “rear brake light did not illuminate,” Sergeant Steele reported.
The man driving the car gave permission to search it. Sergeant Steele said Bonilla was the passenger in the car and she had “numerous” Xanax pills in a plastic baggie in her purse.
Possession of the drug without a prescription is a state jail felony. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported when she was found hanging in the holding cell Friday night that she had been arrested for a misdemeanor drug charge.
