Third grade students in Mrs. Wolfford’s class at Orangefield Elementary recently gained firsthand insight into how a courtroom operates through their reading of The Trial of Cardigan Jones. To extend their learning beyond the classroom, the students toured the Orange County Courthouse, where they met with the Court Coordinator and Judge Mandy White-Rogers. During their visit, students observed a real courtroom, asked questions, and learned about the roles and responsibilities involved in conducting a trial.
Following the field trip, students applied what they had learned by participating in a mock trial titled The Case of the Missing Candy Bar. Taking on the roles of judge, bailiff, attorneys, witnesses, and jury members, the students practiced critical thinking, speaking, and listening skills while connecting literature to real-world experiences. The trial concluded with the jury finding the accused not guilty.
This engaging experience allowed students to deepen their understanding of the judicial system while building communication and collaboration skills.
