The Orangefield Bobcats (1-0) won big in the season opener and Coach Josh Smalley has nothing but praise for the players and coaches. The Bobcats played an almost mistake free game with only one penalty which was on the specialty team and no turnovers in a shutout during which they scored 45 points. Smalley exclaimed, “Really proud of our kids and proud of the effort of our coaches, but we’ve got to move on to this week now.”
This Friday night Orangefield plays at Kirbyville, who lost to Newton in the opener 27-0. Smalley says the Wildcats run out of the Wing-T on offense. They will throw a lot of formations during a game in an effort to confuse opposing defenses with unbalanced looks and which Wildcats are eligible receivers.
Kirbyville has a great running back in Ty Dennis who has run the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds and gained over 1100 yards last season with 20 touchdowns. Dennis and other Wildcats can turn an 8-yard play into an 80-yard play according to Smalley. Orangefield will need to prepare for Kirbyville to go up-tempo and no huddle in the game.
Defensively Kirbyville will use multiple sets and blitzes. The Wildcats base out of a four man front, but Coach Smalley points out they will not stay in it if your offense starts moving the ball. They will send pressure, penetrate and try to get into your backfield. Smalley admits Kirbyville has gotten the better of the Bobcats the last couple of years, and he hopes Orangefield in its first road game can go there and perform well.
The Bobcats will need a repeat of their Week 1 performance to gain a victory this week Smalley predicts. No mental mistakes as far as penalties and no turnovers would be nice.
Smalley emphasizes Orangefield has to be smart on defense and recognize formations and who is eligible while wrapping up to make tackles. If the kids give the effort they gave against Buna in the opening game Coach Smalley believes it will be a good competitive ball game.
