Orangefield jumped out early on Rockdale Wednesday evening and held on for a 4-1 win in Game One of their 3A Region III Semifinal.
In the first, Caleb Fregia grounds out to score Cameron Dearing who reached on a single. Then Kyle Michael singled to score Logan Cheek who also reached on a single.
The Bobcats would come back in the second and score two more. Matt Johnson led off with a single. Caleb Worthy reached on an error. Adam Tran advanced both with a sac bunt. Kane Smith drove in Johnson with a sac fly. Dearing grounds into a fielders choice and M Houghton, running for Worthy, dove past the catcher to score the fourth run of the game.
Rockdale would score one in the fourth and they actually outhit the Bobcats 8-6. But when they needed a big play the defense or pitcher Brycen Tait would come up with an inning ending play. Tait went the distance, giving up one run on eight hits with 6K’s and No walks. “He’s always around the zone,” said Head Coach Tim Erickson. “He has a lot of confidence knowing the defense is behind him. I thought he did a great job.”
Erickson added, “We started out well but had some bad at bats in the middle of the game, so it’s good we still came out with a win despite not playing our best. And the kids know that so I expect them to respond tomorrow.”
Game Two will start at 4pm at Cypress Woods HS. KOGT will be giving an inning by inning account of the game on the KOGT Facebook page.
